My Zerex G-05 coolant was past the 5 year recommended change mark, but I had much less than 150K on it. These test strips confirmed that it was fine. I will test it quarterly for another year and then change it.

I received these Brake Fluid and Coolant test strips as a gift from Phoenix Systems as part of my being an Automotive Technology Student at a local Community College here in South Portland Maine! My teacher was very impressed as was I and I'm super grateful to the awesome people at Phoenix Systems for honoring their old advertisement and my request. I will DEFINITELY be doing business with Phoenix Systems in the future and throughout my career in the Automotive Industry. I will never forget their kindness and generosity towards me. Thank you SO VERY MUCH to the people at Phoenix Systems!!!!!! :)

These are a must-have for every mechanic/shop. They provide proof to the customer that their brake fluid or coolant is needing replacement.
Howard W.
It is just nice to know that the two fluids it is checking are good to go. Will check again in a few months.
Stephan K.
Work as advertised.
Jeffrey B.
These work great. Check both brake fluid and antifreeze in one strip. Have been going by this and a brake water moisture tester on when to change the brake fluid.
What's needed is when the strips don't register anymore or when they expire.
I have some old ones that do not register in the brake fluid. The antifreeze side still works, but not the brake fluid side. I think they are 3 years old.

Haven't even opened the box yet. It is a gift.

Great company. Buy with confidence.

A simple solution to insuring the fluids are still providing the protection needed by the systems. Would even be better if Phoenix Systems had a moisture detection device for the brake fluid that was as accurate.

Worked well!

these strips are a very quick and accurate way to determine the health of brake fluid and coolant
Steven H.
They work as advertised and are very accurate. Already saved me the price of the strips, as I would have prematurely replaced my coolant and brake fluid. I’m letting all my DIY car buds know.
Ed D.
Test strip design is easy to use. However in a brake fluid test the strip color was not clearly a match to a copper corrosion category at the higher levels ie kinda of between 30 and 100. It makes one err to the side of safety and replacing the brake fluid.

After testing I need to change my brake fluid!

I bought these for my husband- he says it works great.

living in UK sourced these test strips from amazon.com/USA. These strips are good for checking the acid in car coolant.the dangers of a coolant being too acidic will corrode the internal engine especially the plastic seals, such as water pump gasket and hoses. And vital coolant sensors.acidic coolant will carry a voltage current ,no good for sensitive sensors

I can’t really tell if this thing is accurate or not since I am not willing to go and check the results in a lab.The price was pretty high and the expiration dates on the product or about a year-which doesn’t make too much sense for the amount of sticks and the fact that oil and brake are replaced on average every six months or so, so I don’t really get what am I supposed to do with the rest of the sticks after the expiration dates expires.

Many people today shop for used cars over new ones. Sure, you can be sure a used car lot will replace the engine oil, most people check the dip stick immediately, what what about the coolant and the brake fluid? This product really helps give you a good indication of these 2 fluids that always seem neglected. A simple dip into the coolant reservoir, flip the strip over and stick it into the master cylinder reservoir and you will have your answer. Accurately shows the condition of these two important fluids and insight into how well the vehicle your looking at was maintained. Also great to have in your toolbox to check your fluids from time to time.

Great product that can test both brake fluid and coolant. It can tell you the freeze range of the coolant but also the PH values which can affect corrosion in the system. Gave a couple of strips to a professional mechanic friend and he was very impressed at how easy they were to use and the info provided by each strip.
ENGINEER 10388
I saw this on a YouTube video by Scotty Kilmer. He's a straight shooting senior auto mechanicc and really liked it. My tests showed brake fluid excellent, radiator coolant borderline (so I had a coolant flush done). One test strip does both (on opposite ends) and you get 15 of them! This product is low cost peace of mind.
Erik
Testing the brake fluid in the reservoir with these strips doesn't tell you anything about the condition of the brake fluid in your brake calipers and brake lines because brake fluid isn't "cycled" through the brake system. The fluid in the calipers and lines more or less stays there and is just pushed back and forth when braking. This is also where you're more likely to have moisture build up. So these strips are only useful if you check fluid bled from the calipers, but if you're bleeding the calipers, you're 95% of the way to just replacing the brake fluid, so these strips are of limited utility. That said, they do appear to work.

Very important to measure the coolant PH (acidity) . 3 year old car. The car coolant seemed to the eye to be in good condition, however by testing the PH in it found the coolant to be bad PH condition. Proceeded to replace the coolant. Coolant not only increases boiling point but also prevent corrosion and lubricates. Good value for preventive maintenance.
RonRon
I got these strips to see if the coolant my 2015 Golf TDI required changing, bear it mind it's on a factory fill (5 years, 31k miles). The readings I got from two separate test strips (right and center) said my coolant glycol level was around 50% (expected for factory fill with no top-off) and pH between 6.5-7. Then I ran a control test with a 3rd strip (left), using fresh concentrated G13 coolant straight from the bottle, the control strip worked as expected: basic (pH 11) and 100% glycol content.
jot
Tested the coolant and brake fluid on four vehicles. Clear indication of the current fluid condition. The brake fluid test on one car showed that replacement was required, which I suspected. Now that a fluid condition baseline has been set, I will test periodically to check for change in condition. Overall, I am satisfied with the test strips, especially since newer vehicles use longer life coolant that may not need to be changed as frequently. The sealed packaging for each test strip keeps them fresh for testing.

Break fluid and antifreeze are two very important fluids in your vehicle. Using the affordable and easy to use Phoenix test strips you can easily monitor the condition of the coolant as well as the Often Overlooked break fluid in all of your vehicles. These test strips go beyond simple “pass/fail” or “good/no good” using the color scale on the packaging you can clearly see exactly what the condition of your coolant and break fluid is. Checking these fluids regularly and replacing them before they have reached the end of their useful life cycle as is the case with antifreeze or become contaminated with water and other undesirable elements in the break fluid will save huge amounts of money in repair bills.

I originally bought this to test the 5+ year old dex cool in my car's radiator. I ended up going ahead and getting a flush / refill before the strips arrived. I figured I might as well test the new dex cool, just to see what these strips do. The glycol reading on it was fine but the pH was as low as you could get. This made no sense. I know the shop used new coolant. In fact, I heard the manager ordering 8 gallons of new dex cool from his supplier while I was waiting for some other work to be finished. So, I decided to check the pH of my tap water with another strip. This also came back with the lowest reading possible. I know this water is fine, having tested it with urinalysis pH strips before. Besides, I would probably know without any scientific investigation if my water were as acidic as soda. Considering the price of these testing sticks, I wasn't about to do any more experiments. I did not use the brake fluid testing sides of the strips at all. I don't know if I ever will, since I have no reason to trust the results.

These are a fantastic way to check the status of any car's brake fluid and coolant. Much cheaper than a specific hydrometer for brake fluid, it also has the dual function to check the coolant. Somewhat expensive for what you get, but completely worth it. If your mechanic suggests a flush of some fluids, you can now know whether it is required or just an added expense.
dougy
They seem to be reasonably accurate in some tests that I conducted.
Murray
I originally question the accuracy of such an inexpensive product, but after comparing my vehicles brake fluid and antifreeze with other vehicles I became assured that for the lost cost of testing my fluids before spending $200 or more it's well worth the cost. The dealer was going to charge me $200 to flush my brake fluid as a part of recommended maintenance. However, after testing I discovered I don't have to spend the $200 at this time.
TDC
The strips are easy to use. Their accuracy is off a little but I use them as a go/no go decision. Definitely better than just looking at the fluids. I believe they will allow me to receive the value of the fluids without swapping out early

these worked great, just as good as the more "commercial" brands and they come with a card to mark and hand to the customer for future reference and great customer communication.

Simple and easy to use. I primarily bought these to do an annual check my brake fluid on a Tesla Model 3. After removing the access cover and cleaning around the brake fluid container you open the cap and insert the brake fluid side of the strip. Wait 90 seconds and check the color with the included chart to see where you stand. Resealable porch for storing the individually wrapped strips. Should last a long time. Can use the other end to check coolant if needed.
Kevin
I have an auto repair shop. We used to recommend brake flushes based solely on the appearance of the fluid. Since purchasing and using these, we've performed a lot more needed brake fluid flushes than we did with just a visual inspection. The appearance of the fluid just isn't enough to make that determination. The graduated color scale is very helpful to determine exactly, the condition of the fluid. We don't use the coolant tester as often. And since each strip has a brake fluid condition test on one end and the coolant tester on the other, I cut the individual foil wrapper open down one side lengthwise, with scissors, then use the brake fluid testing end, cut the (usually) unused coolant testing end off and put it back in the foil package for later use. I keep the unopened ones in one labeled bag and put the cut ones in a bag labeled "coolant testers only".

The brake side of strip works but I agree with many of the reviewers that the coolant side does not, at least for Toyota Red long life coolant.Look at my picture of the coolant. The top card is my old 10+ year coolant with over 15,000 miles on it. It showed 50% freeze/boil protection and 6.5 to 7 pH, so I decided to change it. Look at the second card right below it which is the new 50/50 (coolant/distilled water) and it shows the exact same numbers. The third card is the 10+ year old coolant only and it shows even lower freeze protection when the coolant itself not mixed should have a much higher freeze level. Maybe the red in the Toyota coolant makes the pH strip read more acidic when it actually isn't. Anyway the coolant part of the strip was worthless in my situation. The brake side seem to work well. Look at the picture for the brake fluid. The first card is fluid I opened 6 months ago but never used. It showed no corrosion level. The second card is unused, but 20 year old Prestone fluid I had lying around. It was showing some corrosion but not much. It makes sense, since it was never used but 20+ years old. The third card is my original 24 year old Toyota fluid with 90,000 miles on it and it was 100 on the corrosion scale not quite 200 when replacement is recommended. Goes to show you how good the OEM Toyota fluid is. I did change it since my water absorption test showed it needed to be replaced.Would I buy it again? NoWould I recommend it? No, unless you only going to use it for the brake fluid test.

The copper/ test does not seem to work. Only reacts around the edge of the indicator. Maybe I'm not leaving enough liquid on the strip. In other words maybe I'm not leaving it in the liquid long enough and shaking it off too vigorously. Website did not have the answers.

Got an older car with low mileage and wanted to make sure the coolant is still good, didn't feel like waiting to take to the dealer to have it checked, so I decided to try these out, they work great. Coolant is fine.

To test the coolant in a car we'd just bought. We were assured the coolant had been changed but weren't sure. The strip showed perfect PH balance which was confirmed by a local fleet chem lab.I can avoid changing the coolant. The break fluid is still good but will need changing in the next 12~18 months at 10PPM water.Great time saver!!!!!

Worth every penny, no wasting money on premature coolant and brake fluid changes.

Went to the dealership to get my mom's car an oil change. Employee came out and stated that she needed a coolant flush as well as brake fluid flush. I politely declined the service and bought these test strips. Not only it didn't need any of the recommended services, both fluids were pretty much almost brand new.I would always recommend having these strips on hand to test whether or not you need to change these fluids to save yourself some money!Thank you !

Local mechanic shop used a brake fluid testing strip by this company. I decided that I would try them and so far they seem to be accurate.

Nicely designed product, but I had a couple of issues. 1) The Coolant test has two sites on the strip, but no indication of which is for Glycol% and which for pH. I think I figured it out by looking at the starting colors and _assuming_ those are the case before dipping in coolant. See photo with cap closed. 2) After dipping, the top (see - which is top?) one matched the 50% mixture - so that's good - and the reading seemed reasonably unambiguous. I tried this on fluid in car as well as a couple-year-old jug of unused (but not full) fluid I had on hand. BUT - the bottom strip is problematic. It shows green on the edges at first while red/brown/yellow-ish in the middle. But after a few minutes (it says wait 30 seconds to 5 minutes), I defnitely got some good green. My guess from the photos is my pH is between 6.5 and 8. Hard to tell, but the green that developed after it soaked for a few minutes is reasonably reassuring.Overall, I'm pleased with the product and would recommend it, but wish the quality-control was a bit better. I would buy again though. Probably better than an (uncalibrated) electronic pH measurement and a lot easier to use :-)

Been using annually for about 6 years now. Has certainly saved a lot of time and money over flushing coolant and brake fluid simply on a 3-5 year schedule.Had an issue recently where some coolant tested rather acidic. It was lifetime coolant so I contacted the manufacturer. They requested a sample and the result was that the coolant was fine. Turns out my test strips had expired and the result was a bad reading.I contacted the Phoenix Systems customer support and they were excellent. They told me that while the strips are good for up to 36 months, there is always a chance that Amazon shipped older stock. They sent me a sample of fresh strips and it confirmed that the coolant was fine. Now when I purchase a new package I write an expiration date on it for 2.5 years out. I think it should prevent this issue in the future.Only recommendation to Phoenix Systems would be to add an expiration date to the package during manufacturing.Even though it was a bit of a waste of time chasing the false reading, I'll gladly keep buying from Phoenix Systems because they were super helpful in resolving the issue.

After purchasing several private party cars and motorcycles over the least few years, these strips have proven to be give logical outcomes versus a visual inspection of the fluids. Flogged dark looking brake fluid fails, relatively good looking brake fluid tested mid-life. Green fluids that look older read accordingly. Honda OEM blue coolant showed good glycol, but bad pH so I made the decision to replace. These come in individual foil wrappers so it's easy to trust them for a long shelf life. Instead of shaking off the strips aggressively, I let the fluid bead sit on the test medium. This seems to produce a faster color change, which I interpret as more functional when standing there waiting. When the final color hits, it stays that color, it inspires further confidence in the result. I have no reservations about buying these again. Good tool.
Alex K
Tried these out on my car, the brake fluid reading showed it needed changing and the coolant showed fine. Which matched expectations since I had the radiator replace last year (fluid was replaced and would still be good), but brake fluid has been many years. Tried another strip after I had the brake fluid changed and it showed everything good.

These strips confirmed my suspicions. I bought a 3 year old BMW 3 years ago. Now, the check brake fluid service light has been on for 9 months, and last year the car was overheating with the warning light on. Finally I watched a video to get to the brake reservoir and saw it was 100% full and clear. I was suspicious this 6 year old car with 60K miles was still clean and may not be justified for the dealer $255 quote to change the brake fluid. After reviewing the moisture test strips and adding to my cart, this copper test pop-up caught my attention. I read the technical reasoning and it made allot of sense to me as an engineer. While looking for the best price I found these dual purpose strips and was pleased to also verify my coolant condition. Both systems are closed off from external contamination, so I felt if they are not degraded and are nearly like new doing their job, then why spend on putting essentially the same fluid quality back in, and also risk a mistake by an apprentice that causes problems I did not have? Not long ago I got a simple oil change where I always go and upon pickup a bad burning smell came in the cab, and I saw smoke coming from the hood. I went back in and they said oh, sorry guy X spilled some oil on the engine. I looked and saw the new guy- lucky me, my car engine now has new gunk buildup as dirt sticks to the new coating of oil. So I give 5 stars for this product since it gives me confidence my brake fluid and coolant are still in great condition and I need not risk some trainee making a mistake that costs me allot more inn the long run. I bought this BMW at the dealer with 2 more years on the warranty and I got 200 feet down the road and noticed the check engine light was on. I used the car literally 1 minute and had to return it for servicing and come back the next day to get it. Should we really believe there are not morons working on our cars? The car has had a light warning to do the vehicle check service a year ago-so I asked how much and they said $700. I thought no way, I bring the car here every month for something under the warranty and you should have noticed by now. Then when the coolant light was on and AC stopped I found the coolant was unbelievably low--I was so upset after 10 visits to the dealer for this and that, they never once check the coolant and have the courtesy to top it off. They wash your car and give coffee and donuts, but never check for the obvious -- clearly the goal is to have you bring the car back as often as possible.

Great addition to tool box. Was gonna change radiator fluids in my Altimas, but testers say both are ok. Saved me some money for now.

I have three older vehicles that I maintain so whatever I can do to minimize my upkeep time is appreciated. Coolant quality is important but it is hard to tell its state without these test strips. I have a bulb antifreeze indicator, but the real issue is always the pH of what is in the vehicle. pH bad means it has to go NOW. With these strips it is a 5 minute test and you know what to do. Same with your brake fluid. You get fourteen strips nicely wrapped for freshness when you need them. I wavered on spending this amount on a little package, but now I highly recommend. It's a quality product and will save you a lot of time from routine flush and fills that are not yet necessary.
Nashoba Losa
Tested the coolant and the brake fluid in my truck and both appear to be in the safe zone for good operations. The testing was straightforward and easily performed with the results easily identified. I will retest again in six months to see if there is a change in the performance indication of both fluids. I am optimistic that the results are accurate.
Michael Warner
Hoping they are accurate
Nick
Each individual strip is in an airtight pocket, ie think bandaid-style peel packaging, but much more heavy-duty (and harder to open). That means these strips can last a long time if left in cool and dry conditions!
ibready
Takes the guess work out of changing your coolant. My original plan is draining and filling (the radiator only) once a year. These strips validate that my coolant is still top notch when I do this!
Amazon Customer
This is a good product concept/idea that attempts to provide some very useful information about critical functional fluids. However, the present iteration of the product falls a bit short in generating this information. First, there are no expiration or “best if used by” dates stamped on the package-the Amazon product related discussion claims a 3 year shelf life. Ok, so how old is the product/package I received and how long has it been sitting in inventory? Are the test results I just generated from my first test accurate, how about in 6 or 12 months? The manufacturer really should address this shortcoming and add a “best if used by” stamp to the package so consumers/commercial shops can be confident the test results are accurate. Secondly, the incremental Glycol % measurements move from increments of 10 points then jump inexplicably from 60% to 100%. My daughter just bought a used car and I tested her coolant with the strips and the test results were in the 60%-100% range. Ok, so how am I to tell if the level is 62% or a very imbalanced +80% level? I had to use the old reliable Preston pump tester to get an accurate read. Point being, if your Glycol levels are higher than 50% you won’t get an accurate read you can have confidence in with these strips. I officially rate this product a 3 on a 5 point scale but 2.5 if it was available would be a more appropriate rating. The manufacturer really needs to address these shortcomings to make this an excellent product.
Gary R. Webber
The package contained plenty of test strips and colored comparison charts to go with them. The instructions were clear and complete. The results were accurate when compared to other mechanical devices.

This product lets you see clearly how close your fluids are to needing replacement. We all used to replace fluids on a schedule, or many did not replace them at all. These test strips take minutes to use, and let you see clearly. For those in commercial auto repair, this is a great tool for selling the fluid changes services that will keep your customer in their vehicle longer.
Ian
These are the best bang for your buck to get accurate reading on your coolant and brake fluid testing in one go. Easy to use and gives a broader spectrum on where your fluid readings are measured. Used brake fluid testers that use the two prongs to read if fluid needs to be changed and gave me inaccurate results even if the device is wiped clean after each use. Each strip is sealed closed so these will last for years. Buy these.
Brandon
This product is actually amazing. Super good value. I was able to check the coolant on my entire family’s cars. This is an easy quick thing to do to give you piece of mind and know when it is time to do a flush. Do it before winter.

Reliable and Convenient Brake Fluid and Coolant Testing SolutionI recently purchased the Phoenix Systems 8006-B Double-Ended Brake Fluid + Coolant Test Strips, and I am pleased with their performance and effectiveness. Here's my review of this product. The inclusion of 15 individually wrapped test strips in one pack provides excellent value for money. This generous quantity ensures that I have an ample supply for multiple brake fluid and coolant tests, allowing me to monitor the condition of my vehicle's vital fluids over an extended period. The double-ended design of the test strips is a notable feature. With one end specifically designed for testing brake fluid and the other end for testing coolant, it offers convenience and versatility. This eliminates the need for separate testing tools or kits, saving both time and storage space. The testing process itself is straightforward and user-friendly. I found the instructions provided to be clear and easy to follow, even for someone with limited automotive maintenance experience. The test strips produce reliable and accurate results, providing a quick indication of the fluid's condition. The foil wrapping of each test strip ensures their longevity and protects them from environmental contaminants, preserving their accuracy. This packaging design is especially helpful for those who perform occasional tests or store the strips for future use.One small drawback is that the test strips require careful interpretation of the color changes to determine the fluid's condition accurately. While the provided color chart is helpful, it could benefit from being more detailed or accompanied by additional descriptions to further aid interpretation.Overall, the Phoenix Systems 8006-B Double-Ended Brake Fluid + Coolant Test Strips offer a reliable and convenient solution for testing brake fluid and coolant. The quantity of test strips, double-ended design, and foil wrapping make it an excellent choice for regular maintenance checks and keeping an eye on fluid quality.I would recommend these test strips to both DIY car enthusiasts and professional mechanics seeking a cost-effective and reliable method for assessing the condition of brake fluid and coolant in their vehicles..

Test strips worked well on the green antifreeze and also on brake fluid. They did not work as well on the orange antifreeze, harder to see color on strip.

The copper/ test does not seem to work. Only reacts around the edge of the indicator. Maybe I'm not leaving enough liquid on the strip. In other words maybe I'm not leaving it in the liquid long enough and shaking it off too vigorously. Website did not have the answers.

Local mechanic shop used a brake fluid testing strip by this company. I decided that I would try them and so far they seem to be accurate.

Tested the coolant and the brake fluid in my truck and both appear to be in the safe zone for good operations. The testing was straightforward and easily performed with the results easily identified. I will retest again in six months to see if there is a change in the performance indication of both fluids. I am optimistic that the results are accurate.

2005 4runner developed intake manifold seal leak at 170,000 miles- and used Gm sealant tablets to seal it buy adding to the pink coolantthe gm tablets were added in july 2018 and has worked ok so far by needed 5 tableets to seal the problemupdate: just tested my 4runner 2005, new radiator in 2015, tests came out negative- no need for thatexpensive coolant flush for nowthe problem is by adding the tablets into the coolant to save myself from a $4000 fix i have just altered theboiling point/freezing point/ph/corrosiion protection of the toyota coolant- i doubt i will get the full benefit of the 5 yr long life toyota coolant since i have contaminated it to patch a major gasket leaki am going to need these strips to monitor the ph of the coolant whilst the gm seals continue to patch and figure outwhen to flush the coolant and re-apply the gm seal tablets

Quick and easy way to check coolant and brake fluid.

Test strips worked well on the green antifreeze and also on brake fluid. They did not work as well on the orange antifreeze, harder to see color on strip.

Simple way to save money on unnecessary or prematurely scheduled maintenance. Tested the strips on two vehicles, one with known older brake fluid, and got two different results as would and should be expected.

Use these to check my cars yearly. Just before winter.
